Project Definition

The Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) is a breakthrough flagship underground rail transit project executed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It marks a major milestone for the Philippines by establishing an underground, high-capacity heavy rail line built to modernize urban mobility and directly alleviate arterial corridor delays across the capital region.

Alignment & Scope

The alignment spans an active operational route length of 33.103 kilometers completely underneath the urban core. It bypasses heavily saturated surface bottlenecks by routing heavy passenger volumes through strategic underground channels.

Traversing Cities: Valenzuela, Caloocan, Quezon City, Pasig, Makati (previously), Taguig, Pasay, and Parañaque.

Technical Framework & Civil Works

Station Infrastructure
  • 17 Passenger Stations: Serves dynamic underground hubs stretching from East Valenzuela down to Bicutan.
  • Top-Down Cut & Cover: Civil frameworks implement typical structural footprints measuring 200m L x 20m W.
  • Structural Depth: Sub-surface builds descend to an average depth of 20 meters, roughly equivalent to a 3-to-4 story basement.
Tunneling Construction
  • Shield Tunnel Boring: Parallel tube networks are bored utilizing a dedicated fleet of 19 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM).
  • Operational Metrics: Excavations feature a 6.7m shield diameter, advancing at a rate of 8-10m/day with 6-part tunnel rings.
  • NATM Application: Turn backs and pocket tracks utilize the New Austrian Tunneling Method.
Ugong Depot Facilities
  • Operational Footprint: Spans 30.37 Hectares at Brgy. Ugong, Valenzuela City, housing 19 dedicated facilities.
  • Core Complexes: Integrates the Operations Control Center (OCC), Main Workshop, Light Repair Shop (LRS), and Wheel Re-profiling Shop.
  • PRI Academy: Contains the Philippine Railway Institute (PRI) campus and MMSP Training Center.
